Exploring Jukjeon-dong and “western” food

After talking to mom and dad on Skype (video calling = like being in the next room) AJ and I took the afternoon to walk around Jukjeon, which is our district of Yongin. First we checked out Shinsaegae (Shin-say-gay), an enormous department store with designer crap everywhere. We even found something called “Bling water” that had a bottle covered in rhinestones…

We decided to go next door to the less upscale E-mart to buy our groceries. Apparently Koreans have an obsession with mayonnaise because they put it in everything. (They like Spam, too). We bought thousand islands dressing that tastes like, well, mayonnaise, mmmm. We also found spaghetti sauce, but it tastes like they may have put some spicy pepper/chili powder in it.

What we’ve learned so far is that Koreans will often try to mimic western food’s appearance without really investigating what the flavor should be. This is why one of the other teachers said she was once served nachos with whipped cream. Apparently, they just didn’t take the time to find out that the white stuff was sour cream.

Later we hiked up the hill behind our apartment and happened upon the Dankook University (AJ thought it sounded an awful lot like Dane Cook university — a Korean school for western comedy?). Either way, we climbed a lot of stairs for this picture of the area.

  2. Hello, Excuse the intrusion but have you noticed any hotels in Jukjeon. We are due to visit friends in August and think we might be overstaying hospitality to stay with them.

    Thanks for any help

    Best wishes Fran

  3. Hi Fran,

I actually haven’t noticed any hotels immediately in Jukjeon. However, I know that in nearby Suji, which is approximately a 5-10 minute cab ride away, there are some lower-end hotels. I’m not sure of any others, but I think the Korean Tourism Organization might be able to help you. The Web site is: http://english.tour2korea.com/index.asp

According to the Web site, the London office’s e-mail address is: london@mail.knto.or.kr

I hope this information is helpful. Safe travels!

  4. Hi,

Thanks for the info. We are travelling out to visit friends and don’t want to offend them but are worried about outstaying our welcome even though they have offered to host us. Our son is definitely going to want to stay with his friend and ideally we would like to have been not too far away.

Its really interesting to see your photos.

    Best wishes

    Fran

  5. Hey, moving to Jukjeon 2-dong, in march, how do you like living there.

    • Hi, we really like Jukjeon. It’s not too far from Seoul, and there’s easy access to buses and the subway to get where ever you need to go. Which school are you teaching at?

  6. Hi Danielle,

I will teaching at CMS (Christian Mission School) in Jukjeon (October 2009). Do you have any info. regarding this school?

    Thanks,
    Adam

    • Hey Adam,

Good luck! I hope you enjoy Jukjeon like we did. It’s been some months now, but Jukjeon has less urban sprawl than Seoul, though it is still a growing area. Sorry, but we don’t know about CMS, because there are so many schools (public and private) in that area.

      Best,
      AJ
