We’ve been here for just a bit more than a week, and we’re feeling more than a bit lost. We decided that the Yael Naim song “New Soul” (you know, the song from the Macbook Air commercial) is our theme song for the week:
“I’m a new soul. I came to this strange world hoping I could learn a bit ’bout how to give and take. But since I came here felt the joy and the fear finding myself making every possible mistake.”
Today we watched the kindergarten classes perform for their parents in a thing called Festival (see photo below). It was adorable — until it lasted for 2 1/2 hours. Afterward we went back to the school to give tests to the older kids. At work, everything’s cool because we’re busy and surrounded by English speakers.

But once we go home, we have nothing to distract us. We have nothing to do but learn Hangul and go shopping/out for food we’re not entirely sure about. (Guess this is all part of the adventure). I think part of the problem is that we have no phones or TV, so we’re feeling a little disconnected from people here. So, it’s a little rough right now, but I have no doubt we’ll figure things out.
“I’m a young soul in this very strange world hoping I could learn a bit about what is true and fake. But why all this hate? Try to communicate. Finding trust and love is not always easy to make. La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la…”
Hi guys,
They look so cute on stage. I bet they’re an adventure in class!!! Hang tough, things will get better. Talk to you tomorrow.

Wow! That sure does take me back…
Koreans sure are an interesting people, are they not? = ) It takes a while to really understand just how unique the Korean Culture is. Why don’t you check out Culture Shock: Korea. Its a great book that will give you some insight into the culture. There’s a ton of things to do in the city, but in the beginning, it just takes some time to get used to being there. Best of luck! I hope you really enjoy your time in Korea. How long will you be staying there?

Hi Tiger,
Thanks for the advice! We have several Korea/Koreans books; it’s just a matter of applying everything! We’ll be here for the next year, and I think we will definitely enjoy our time.

“Ultimately, here and now is more important than then and there..” Remember that. Never live in the future, nor in the past. Live in the present and only the present, for that is what will change your lives. I love you Guys. (Words of wisdom from the lil’ sis
